Indigenous Eye-care Clinic

Yesterday CFEH, the Brien Holden Vision Institute and Bulbuwil Aboriginal Healthy Lifestyle Program ran a collaborative eye clinic at Sutherland Hospital for the local Indigenous community.

While studies have shown that 94% of vision loss in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations is either preventable or treatable, only one in six Indigenous Australians are having their eyes examined each year.

The Eye Clinic was established as a supportive, culturally safe space providing accessible eye care for Indigenous Australians. This approach has quickly gained acceptance with extremely positive feedback from clients and two more clinic days have been scheduled in the coming months. Numerous preventable and treatable eye conditions have been diagnosed through this clinic and appropriate management of these conditions arranged.

It is a great example of what collaboration can achieve.
